That article pushed the Ferris Beuhler angle so hard it hurt...

“maybe it could have been avoided if they watched the movie”

No. Maybe it could have been avoided if the dealer hadn’t driven it 300km.

Sounds more like the car’s owner is trying to blackmail the dealership for a free upgrade. He has a whole list of other problems and claims the car he bought is a lemon. And he’s kept the loaner for seven months. I hate dealerships, but I don’t think they’re the problem in this instance.

Sometimes those extended drives are necessary. But the owner should always me consulted beforehand. There isn’t nearly enough information in that article for me to judge whether it would’ve been appropriate in this case or not. Nor does it state how he asked other dealers if long drives would be necessary, which very much matters. If he asked “is it normal to road test cars for hundreds of kilometers?”, Yeah they’ll laugh. If he asked “under certain circumstances can it sometimes be appropriate to road test cars for hundreds of kilometers?” They ought to say yes, because it is.

Don’t know what these extended repairs were, but let’s assume it was an engine out service, probably with some diagnosis for at least one or two problems. With more than one problem we can safely assume at least one problem will be intermittent, requiring multiple road tests, a few km each, but they add up if you can’t duplicate the problem. Then after the engine is reinstalled, multiple road tests would be required to make sure everything is sound, equaling a bare minimum of maybe 30km, preferably more like 50km. Then let’s assume there was an issue, maybe the new water pump was bad out of the box and leaking. Engine has to come out again. Same 30-50km drive after. Well now the engine is in, and let’s assume the intermittent problem has been fixed. Further road testing may be required to completely verify repair of that as well, especially if it occurred under different circumstances than you would encounter for the engine road test. That’s 150-200km easy. But if the car has as many problems as he alludes to, and it being an Aston, I think it’s safe to assume that my one intermittent problem and engine out service analogy is completely within the realm of possibility, and maybe even on the low side of what would’ve been required if it were a perfect shit storm of events.

The dealer still should’ve consulted him though. But I’m putting that on the service advisor.
